Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey. The crowds welcome him, shouting “Hosanna!” but the teachers of the law continue to plot against him.

How amazing to speak at @spurgeoncollege today, sharing about the life and ministry of Biddy and @oswaldchambers and @myutmost!

The connections to Charles Spurgeon are wonderful... Oswald's mother came to faith in Jesus through his preaching, and both she and her husband were baptized by this famous Baptist preacher. After the family moved down to London from Scotland when Oswald was 15, he and his father attended a meeting at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, hearing Spurgeon preach. On the way home, Oswald said to his dad, "I wish there would have been an opportunity to make a commitment for Christ at the meeting." Stopping under a lamppost, his dad said, "You can do it now, my boy!" And he did.

And the world has never been the same.

Lovely to be in a room full of world changers, encouraging them to, in Oswald and Biddy's words for today from My Utmost, "Get up and do it. Take yourself by the scruff of the neck and shake off your laziness."

Okay, so maybe I wasn't that direct!

More photos from Iona! Some of us took a boat trip

More photos from Iona! Some of us took a boat trip out to the island of Staffa to see the fascinating rock formations from the volcanos 59 million years ago. During nesting season the island hosts a lot of puffins - a desire of my heart to see. I knew we were probably too early to see them, and if you scroll through the photos you’ll see that I DID indeed see them - but from afar. They are a sea bird, after all, and only come to land for nesting and caring for their young.

The island is fascinating, puffins or not. It felt a bit precarious walking along the edge, knowing the one false move could result in dire consequences. Fair play to one of our group who was less mobile but determined to go to Fingal’s Cave, and to our @mccabepilgrim representative and another of the group who ensured she made it!

I loved my Iona experience so much that I’m leading another one next year! 31 March to 5 April; details to come on the McCabe website.

A highlight during our recent @mccabepilgrim trip

A highlight during our recent @mccabepilgrim trip to Iona was the boat trip to Staffa. Just wow! The Vertical rocks you see were created by volcanoes like 59 million years ago. And yes, it was scary to walk along that little passageway on the edge of the rocks.

Join me in reveling in God‘s creation for a minute, while taking in these glories.

Getting to the island of Iona (in Scotland’s inn

Getting to the island of Iona (in Scotland’s inner Hebrides) entails two coaches (US: bus) and two ferries (all ably organized by @mccabepilgrim). The coachride on the approach to Iona is extremely narrow in places, and much of the road seems to be single lane, with regular passing places. Our driver knew who was local and who was a tourist!

Some photos from the journeys to and from the isalnd. I didn’t take many on the journey back to Glasgow because it was pouring with rain and was at night. We saw the landscape change, as the water then rushed down the hills on our return journey.

Journeys can be unexpected and unwelcome; they can be planned and exciting; they can be turbulent and fun.

A Celtic prayer you might enjoy:

Pilgrims often have to pivot - circumstances out of their control lead to a change of plans. We always knew that the weather here in western Scotland was changing at the end of the week but when we woke to a named storm (Kathleen), we all started to wonder if we’d be stuck on the island.

With it taking us two ferries and two coach (bus) journeys to return to Glasgow I knew that Carol and our friends at @mccabepilgrim would have a lot of logistics to sort if we were to leave today… when everything fell into place we 25 pilgrims had an hour to pack and vacate the hotel and get down to the rain-drenched ferry port to start our long journey. (If we had stayed we’d likely not have left Iona until Monday at the earliest.) And we did! We’re now on the last leg, and all being well we’ll be deposited to our hotel in Glasgow in an hour. Huge kudos to McCabe!
