As we start Lent, a time to reflect and to offer ourselves as a living sacrifice, I’ve been pondering John’s Gospel. My aim during Lent is to share some poems based on this unique story of Jesus with John’s emphasis on union with God through the indwelling of Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

May your Lenten journey be filled with insight, wonder, and love.

We can easily become jaded – just look at the st

We can easily become jaded – just look at the state of the world. But God can and DOES changes us. Through the amazing mystery of God actually indwelling us through the Spirit, we become more like Jesus. This is why I explored friendship with Jesus in Transforming Love – our relationship with God means we’ll never be the same. In a good way.

My last batch of photos from the amazing @mccabepi

My last batch of photos from the amazing @mccabepilgrim pilgrimage/retreat to Iona! (I figure I’d better share these before I lead a retreat at Penhurst Retreat Centre next week...)

Such a wonderful time - so much so that I’ll be leading again next year (31 March to 5 April); more details to come from McCabe.

1. Iona Abbey is centuries old and so beautiful.
2. St Columba - his symbol is the dove.
3. The west coast of Iona - it’s not normally this calm...
4. The calm before Storm Kathleen!
5. Spring flowers are so glorious. I got to see another batch of daffodils, as the ones in London are long over.
6. You’d think you’re in the Caribbean with waters so clear and blue - but for the brisk and chilly wind!
7.-9. The ruins of the the Nunnery (some of the best preserved ruins, as Cromwell didn’t wield his destruction that far north).
10. SUCH a fun flight home. I was ‘that person’ who sat in the wrong seat (a row ahead of my assigned seat) upon boarding. The American whose seat I was in wasn’t very pleased, but it provided an opening to the father/daughter seating in the row behind me when I moved back. He was a fascinating guy to talk with - a pilot for private planes, with many famous clients whom he shared some fun stories about. As we were chatting I saw this fabulous person walking down the aisle and I exclaimed (I was a bit hyped up after the intense week): My favourite craftsman! Do you recognize Rob from “Sort Your Life Out” and “Interior Design Masters”? (Those who aren’t able to get BBC programmes, you won’t know him.) He was sitting in the aisle seat just behind me, and was so lovely to talk with - he’s just as nice and genuine as on TV. He shared some amazing stories too. I was delighted to fully embrace my enthusiastic American self and introduce Rob to Gregor the pilot. Such fun.

Releasing and receiving… a practice I embraced when on the island of Iona recently with fellow pilgrims.

I welcome you to select two stones and use them as a means of releasing to God something that is weighing on you – a burden, a relationship, etc. Throw it into the body of water and then receive whatever God has for you.

How amazing to speak at @spurgeoncollege today, sharing about the life and ministry of Biddy and @oswaldchambers and @myutmost!

The connections to Charles Spurgeon are wonderful... Oswald's mother came to faith in Jesus through his preaching, and both she and her husband were baptized by this famous Baptist preacher. After the family moved down to London from Scotland when Oswald was 15, he and his father attended a meeting at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, hearing Spurgeon preach. On the way home, Oswald said to his dad, "I wish there would have been an opportunity to make a commitment for Christ at the meeting." Stopping under a lamppost, his dad said, "You can do it now, my boy!" And he did.

And the world has never been the same.

Lovely to be in a room full of world changers, encouraging them to, in Oswald and Biddy's words for today from My Utmost, "Get up and do it. Take yourself by the scruff of the neck and shake off your laziness."

Okay, so maybe I wasn't that direct!

More photos from Iona! Some of us took a boat trip

More photos from Iona! Some of us took a boat trip out to the island of Staffa to see the fascinating rock formations from the volcanos 59 million years ago. During nesting season the island hosts a lot of puffins - a desire of my heart to see. I knew we were probably too early to see them, and if you scroll through the photos you’ll see that I DID indeed see them - but from afar. They are a sea bird, after all, and only come to land for nesting and caring for their young.

The island is fascinating, puffins or not. It felt a bit precarious walking along the edge, knowing the one false move could result in dire consequences. Fair play to one of our group who was less mobile but determined to go to Fingal’s Cave, and to our @mccabepilgrim representative and another of the group who ensured she made it!

I loved my Iona experience so much that I’m leading another one next year! 31 March to 5 April; details to come on the McCabe website.
